A Short History and Walk through Orchard's KeepThe Hendersons were a family that would capture a dream. They ran a small fruit and vegetable market in Sylvanian Woods transporting the juicy and hearty fruits and vegetables in fresh from the northern orchards travelling through Cloverleaf Corners on the way and on the way back too. While in those northern forests and orchards quenched by High Moss Lake, the Hendersons realized that they were at home. They moved their family north opening a cannery and food processing mill on the south side of the Deep Root River and building a home on the opposite side of the river alongside the families that ran the orchards. The Hendersons brought many jobs, and therefore critters to the north, and soon the northern orchards were filled with enough critters that they needed a name to put on the map of Sylvania. Without the Hendersons and their mill, Orchard's Keep may never have been.
Today Orchard's Keep has kept on growing. A nice business district anchors the town north of the Deep Root River and south of Pebble Brook housing the Keats Marmalade Bank, the Petite's Courtyard Restaurant, the Norwood Applewood Department Store, and a dozen other small shops and boutiques with a few apartment complexes for those critters who like city living away from the big cities down South. As the town grew, so did the suburbs. First came Brookside, now filled with what the younger generation would call "old homes," and then as the houses began growing closer and closer to the farms the neighborhood of Meadow's Edge. Why Meadow's Edge? The farms are in a neighborhood named after the vast rolling meadows. Meadow's Edge is about to butt right up against the Meadowfield farmlands, if the critters keep coming looking to build there own dream homes. Between Pebble Brook and Deep Root River and neighboring the Downtown is the gated community of New Acres. The Hawthornes and Marmalades live in two of the grandest homes in Orchard's Keep: Seven Gables and Pleasantree. South of the Deep Root River is Cannery Park, the home of the Henderson Foods Mill, Norwood Printing, and a couple other factories. There is a small housing community and trailer park located in Cannery Park. If you take the Deep Root River to the west, you will find yourself in High Moss Lake, the end of the northern shipping line in Sylvania. Captain Horatio Seadog, retired from captaining his own ship, oversees the docks day and night whenever needed. And from High Moss Lake, you can head northeast on Pebble Brook into the orchard forests, up the Pebble Cascades, and to Pebble Springs where you will be in the orchards of Orchard's Keep. Here is where you will find the newest neighborhood, Cottagewood. It is for the critters that want a quieter life in a forest setting. Cottagewood is where the story begins with the stories of four young boys: Gromwell Cottontail, Peter Pigglywink, Winton Lambrook, and Buster Slydale. As the story continues more will be learned about the secrets of the critters that live in Orchard's Keep. |
What is A Calico Town?
I have always fancied myself as some kind of writer, and I have long wanted to write a story about the Calico Critters and Sylvanian Families in our collection. When my daughter's first birthday began to quickly approach on November 19, 2010, I realized that I had never written her a story of her own from her Papa. Since she had inspired us to collect Calico Critters, because every little girl needs a dolls house, I knew in my deep downs that it only made sense to write the story of our Calico Critters and Sylvanian Families for her.
A Calico Town is a fan fiction serial. I indeed to keep writing new stories about the citizens of Orchard's Keep because every critter in our collection seems to have a story to tell when I first get them out of their packaging and into my hands. I chose to focus on four boys for the original stories because, even though I'm writing these stories for my daughter, I'm still a boy in my own deep downs. I believe that no matter how old I get, I'll always think of myself as a little boy like Gromwell Cottontail. He's my Calico buddy.
