A Calico Town: a Calico Critters and Sylvanian Families Fan Site was last updated on 19 May 2012.
Welcome, Calico Critters and Sylvanian Families Fans.
Our daughter, Adah, was born on November 19, 2009. Not knowing what to buy a one-month-old for Christmas and wanting her first Christmas gift from us to be extra-special, my wife and I decided to start a Calico Critters dollhouse collection for our daughter. I remember fondly playing with the Thislethorn Mouse Family and Timbertop Bear Family from the original Sylvanian Families line when I was a child in the 1980s; I knew that the Calico Critters would be an enjoyable toy for my own child. The first three pieces we bought for her were the Deluxe Village House, the Lambrook Sheep Family, and the Lambrook Sheep Twins. The Lambrook Sheep Family includes four figures: Father, Danny (left); Mother, Barbara; Son, Winton; and Daughter, Iona. The Lambrook Sheep Twins are Sean and Shona.
We thought we were being awfully wise knowing that Calico Critters would be quite an investment. If we were, we thought, to start the collection now and acquire a few new pieces each birthday and Christmas for her, Adah would have a nice size collection to play with when she was old enough without us having to shell out a mound of money all at once. We were pleased with our first purchases, but soon realized that Calico Critters are quite an addiction. Come January 2010, we had already placed three on-line orders for more Calico Critters and accessories that had been retired. We have already joined the UK Sylvanian Families collectors club and are planning our first Flair product purchases. I am trying to immerse myself in all things Calico Critters and Sylvanian Families because they are just so darned cute. I'm not pretending that I am a wealth of information on Calico Critters and Sylvanian Families. I'm just starting my families' own adventure with the collection. I do want to learn as much as I can and share what I learn though. Like Danny Lambrook, I'm a Calico Critters Dad. -Eric 11 February 2010 (originally posted) |

What are Calico Critters and Sylvanian Families?
Calico Critters are a line of collectible animal figures that have taken on human-like characteristics. Most of the critters released in the North American and British collections come with a first and last name and short biography. The products also include buildings and accessories. Picture the ultimate doll's house collection with cute fuzzy residents.
Calico Critters are an imaginative play toy allowing children to manipulate their critters through stories that they create using the buildings and accessories that are available in the product line (or whatever your imagination can create). With a little imagination, critters are able to ride bikes, play with miniature doll houses, celebrate birthdays with cake and party hats, or even ski!
The Calico Critters live in Cloverleaf Corners. The town includes (if you're lucky enough to have them) houses, stores, a stable with horses, and a pre-school nursery with other Calico Critters baby specific items.
Outside of North America, Calico Critters are called Sylvanian Families. The figures are same, sometimes with name or clothing changes, but the Sylvanian Families do have a larger product line. The Sylvanian Families do not live in Cloverleaf Corners but instead in Sylvania (hence their name).
Calico Critters and Sylvanian Families have been produced by Epoch, a Japanese company, since 1985. Currently Calico Critters are distributed by International Playthings in North America and Sylvanian Families by Flair in the United Kingdom.
